Why Board Training? (Wendy Samson and Curt Swenson, 2016)
Summertime is when many good executive directors and CEO’s start recruiting new board members. They look for reliable, positive and contributive professionals who have time to give – not an easy task!
FutureSYNC International knows that effective Board of Directors’ Membership begins by: 1) Recruiting influential individuals with a heart and passion for the organization’s mission; 2) Clearly defining their roles and responsibilities; and 3) Offering members a chance to meaningfully contribute. Board training is vital in establishing an effective, productive and unified culture!
Important learning for board members should center around:
>Understanding roles – not micro-managing;
>Representing the organization, not their own agenda;
>Exhibiting true passion for the mission/vision of the organization;
>Actively attending and participating in board meetings and events;
>Utilizing their influence with the public to benefit the organization;
>Not soliciting complaints and concerns from staff members;
>Attending only sanctioned meetings regarding the organization; and
>Having yearly evaluative responsibilities that support, develop and motivate the E.D./CEO and the organization’s staff members.
So what is the purpose of a board training and what should be considered?
Board members need to know that they’re an integral part of the Board, as soon as possible and on an on-going basis. If they don’t feel comfortable voicing their opinions or if they find themselves without a specialized purpose, the organization will lose their valuable input and board attendance will be poor! Information is what helps everyone feel at ease and is extremely stabilizing.
Accordingly, adult learners in a training need to know that their time is valued, that the organization they are serving is optimizing their knowledge and expertise and that they are going to ENJOY the process! Assigning roles that fit their talents and expertise, along with offering action items and discussion points throughout the meetings will significantly increase your members satisfaction and participation.
So this summer, give FutureSYNC International’s Consultants a call to assist you in establishing an effective, Board of Director’s culture in which your Membership can contribute and thrive!
