A PROMOTION REALITY CHECK
Good supervisors:
Have to spend a greater amount of time listening than talking.
Adapt their knowledge base to become less specific and more global.
Consistently check and upgrade their professional appearance.
Adjust to experiencing more and more criticism from others and develop strategies to accept or withstand rejection.
Are accountable as role models and professional representatives at all times, (out in the community, at conferences, during staff meetings, at the bar, etc.)
Develop stricter boundaries regarding workplace banter.
Acknowledge that they have a greater “effect of error”, as their decisions carry weight that can impact the whole organization.
Trade their “people pleaser” hat for a “graciously speak the truth” cap.
Swap out their “I call it as I see it” mantra for an “I thoughtfully consider before I speak” motto.
Not only accept input and feedback, but request it.
Remember that it’s easy to embrace workplace changes when you are the one making them.
Become cautiously fearless.
