You have seen it a hundred times; professionals making the mistake of thinking that during a presentation, the most important descriptors to get across to the audience are their organization’s services – the “what we do” message. The result is typically a tedious presentation, reviewing virtually every program or product that their organization provides – or worse, the minutiae of their own particular job description. Leaders, your work is important, so how do you make a positive, lasting impression?
In Simon Sinek’s book “Start With Why” (2009), Sinek explains that “People like Martin Luther King Jr., Steve Jobs, and the Wright Brothers might have little in common, but they all started with why. It was their natural ability to start with why that enabled them to inspire those around them and to achieve remarkable things.”
This means starting your presentation with what your organization believes and then, using the power of three, leave your audience with your business’s three main purposes. People can remember three and they will remember you!
