Expectancy Theory (Porter & Lawler, 1968; Vroom, 1964) in its purest form is the notion that we get what we expect to get. One could then argue that we most likely behave in a manner that could actually evoke what we expect. Do you believe that? Do you believe that you can actually engineer your career journey – either down a negative path or up a promising climb, based upon your expectations?
Take a few minutes to examine the truth about what you expect in your career and your life. How do you expect to be treated? What do you need to earn? Where would you like to live? What quality of life do you desire? What brings you joy? By asking yourself these questions throughout your career, you can re-align your expectations and potentially reinforce a positive mental model for your career journey.
