Job Rejection Recovery (FutureSYNC Consultants, 2015)

No matter how it is delivered it hurts.  Everyone at some point of their lives has heard, “You are like a brother to me”, “It’s not you, it’s me”, “I’m sorry you aren’t a fit for this job”, or “We will be hiring someone else”.  Rejection is one of the painful parts of growing up.  Although we may feel horrible at the time that we get this news it is not the end of our opportunities.

Listed below are five ideas for Job Rejection Recovery.

1.Gain Perspective – Remember this rejection might mean that this will not be your sweet spot at this time, not that you aren’t worthy of the job.  Continue searching for your passion and your sweet spot.

2.Stand Tall – Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and continue your journey.  Don’t allow yourself to shrink back and stop.  This is one opportunity out of many possible fits for you.  Chin up, chest out, and start your confident walk again.

3.Get Motivated – Allow this rejection to motivate you.  Take time to write out what you learned through this interview process.  Discover where you have any opportunities for growth. Create a plan to grow.

4.Move Forward – Do not allow yourself to stay in the emotion stage of rejection.  Being rejected brings emotions of shock, insecurity, and anger.  Stop, slow down, break it down, and grow.

5.Own it and solve it – Move away from excuses and allow yourself to put your heart on the line again.  Put a plan together for next steps, apply for others jobs, and go nail it!

Always remember, you are teaching others what to think about you.  How you handle this rejection scenario either confirms their decision or reveals to them a hire they could have had.
